Captain Munnerlyn (3 years, up to $15 million) is now a Viking; Bruce Campbell is now a Redskin. Ted Ginn, a Cardinal (3 years, reportedly $10 million). Domenik Hixon is a Bear.
They've cut Steve Smith officially, though that's been a known for days. Hopeful rumors on a trade turned out to be nothing.
So at the team finishes the third day of the league year, the team has incurred a sixth free agent loss, and Smith's cut makes it look no less bleak. They've retained a few guys (OT Byron Bell, G Garry Williams, TE/FB
and a startling number of linemen have retired, though none were under contract. Each of Jordan Gross, Geoff Hangartner, Jeff Byers have retired, with Travelle Wharton considering it.
The team also lost out on OT Anthony Collins, who suddenly was reported to be between the Buccaneers, returning to the Bengals, or going to Carolina.
They've contacted WR Hakeem Nicks, but he's currently visiting Indianapolis.
They do have a lead out on Saints safety Roman Harper, a SS for the Saints for 8 years, where he started the middle six (plus five as a rookie, and 5/9 last season, where he was ousted for top 15 pick Kenny Vaccaro). Harper's a decent coverage box SS who maintains a good tackle count, gets a respectable number of pass stats (52 deflections in that time; only 7 INT with numerous years without one), but does one thing exceptionally - blitz. He had 7.5 sacks in 2011, a season that Carolina only had one player (Charles Johnson) eclipse. His 17 career is exceptional in that regard for a DB.
I don't know if he's better than Quintin Mikell, but I'd find either acceptable with a better FS.
